Laboratory offerResearch scope

Challenge tests

The challenge test determines the effectiveness of the preservative system used as a result of controlled contamination of the cosmetic product with standard microbial strains (bacteria and fungi).

Research is performed:

  • At the product development stage (fixing the preservation system)
  • During production (confirmation that technological process does not adversely affect maintenance effectiveness)
  • To confirm the effectiveness of the preservative during the shelf life of the product
  • For the protection of the product in case of contamination when it is used by the consumer
  • PN-EN ISO 11930:2012
  • Ph. Eur.
  • Koko-Test methodology

In this study, we may consider environmental strains delivered by the client or derived from natural skin microflora.

Microbiological tests

We carry out microbiological analysis of raw materials and cosmetic products in accordance with the Regulation of the Minister of Health (Journal of Laws of 2003, No. 9, item 107) and COLIPA recommendations.

The tests are performed in accordance with ISO standards:

  • Determination of the number/presence of mesophilic aerobes according to PN-EN ISO 21149: 2017-07
  • Detection of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in accordance with PN-EN ISO 22717:2016-01
  • Detection of Staphylococcus aureus in accordance with PN-EN ISO 22718:2016-01
  • Detection of Escherichia coli in accordance with PN-EN ISO 21150:2016-01
  • Detection of Candida albicans in accordance with PN-EN ISO 18416:2016-01
  • Determination of the number of yeasts and molds according to PN-EN ISO 16212:2017-08
  • Additionally, detection of specific and non-specific microorganisms according to PN-EN ISO 18415:2017-07

Detailed identification of non-specific microorganisms may be carried out using a biochemical assay, mass spectrometry or PCR.

Physicochemical tests

Physicochemical studies are performed to confirm the physicochemical properties of the products and their durability.

Performed research include, among other:

  • pH
  • density
  • viscosity
  • organoleptic assessment (appearance, colour, smell)
  • water activity (Aw)
  • tightness of packaging control
  • thermal stability (temperature test)
  • mechanical stability (centrifuge test)
  • compatibility of the product with packaging
  • determination of heavy metal levels
  • determination of pesticides levels
  • allergen determination
  • and, on client demand, other tests

Application and use test

Research on cosmetics and household chemistry is conducted in terms of the effectiveness and efficiency of the product declared by the customer on the packaging and consist in evaluating the user’s feedback when using the product. The research is designed to assure the consumer that he product used is safe and does not cause side effects.

Tests are conducted on a probation group at home for a specified period of time. Confirmation ofproduct performance is based on the declared properties of the tested product. We also conduct research in controlled conditions, for example in a cosmetic or hairdressing salon.

Comparative studies

Research is conducted to compare the utility of two or more products by a probation group. Evaluation of product properties takes place during self-application of the samples. The research determines the similarities or differences between the tested products.

Safety assessment

Carrying out the Cosmetic Product Safety Report is a mandatory legal requirement of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 30 November 2009 concerning cosmetic products. Safety assessments are developed on the basis of the conformity of the product composition with the law, the toxicological evaluation of the components, exposure assessment and exposure risk, and evaluation of the results of the final product test.

Environmental monitoring

We carry out environmental monitoring in the field of:

  • Microbiological air quality tests
  • Microbiological tests on the surface of rooms and equipment
  • Microbiological purity tests of workers’ hands and protective clothing

Dermatological tests

Dermatological examinations of cosmetics and household chemicals are carried out in order to check the allergenic and irritating properties of the product.

The test is performed on a suitable probation group under the supervision of a specialist. Probates are selected in accordance with the Helsinki Declaration and COLIPA guidelines.

Performed:

  • Semi-open, open and closed patch test
  • Hypoallergenic test
  • Place of usage test
  • Cover test
